Sometimes Gaudiya-Vaisnavas are accused of being 'un-vedic' or 'un-Hindu' because we emphasise Gita and Puranas (Srimad Bhagavatam) and neglect the 'real sastra' like Upanisads and Rg Veda. Of course this whole assumption is fallicious but nevertheless some still accuse us of this.
I thought to ask the assembled Vaisnavas for references specifically to chanting Hare Krishna that they know of from these Sruti sources. I know of at least one clear reference that I'll post here but I'm sure there are more. Please reply with a verse, translation and reference as best you can.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It is clearly stated by Lord Brahma in the Kalisantarana Upanisad:
hare krishna hare krishna
krishna krishna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare
iti sodasakam namnam
kali-kalmasa-nasanam
natah parataropayah
sarva-vedesu drsyate
"These sixteen words of the Hare Krishna mantra are especially meant for counteracting the sins of the age of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of this age there is no alternative but to chant this maha-mantra. After searching through all the Vedic literatures one cannot find a method of religion for this age so sublime as the chanting of Hare Krishna."
---------------------------
That's one. I'm sure there are more. Anyone?

Re: Sruti references for chanting Hare Krishna?
Sat, October 21, 2006 - 2:51 AMSrimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.32
krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam
sangopangastra-parsadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah
"In the Age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship [Lord Caitanya,] the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions."

Re: Sruti references for chanting Hare Krishna?
Sat, October 21, 2006 - 7:41 AMthank you for this nectarean verse. Srimad Bhagavatam being the literary incarnation of Krishna is for us all the authority we need. Sadly, there are other schools of Vedic thought who believe that it is just another of the Puranas. To them this falls under category of smriti and not sruti and they consider it 'milk for babies' whereas Rg Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Upanisads are the 'real Vedas'. The verse I quoted above is Upanisad sruti and I'm sure there are more Sruti verses that establish sankirtana as the recommended process for this age. I just don't know them exactly. I was hoping that we could collectively come up with a substantial list of references.
Grantha-raj Srimad Bhagavatam ki ... jaya!
